Supreme Court Justice Potter Stewart said that "“Censorship reflects a society's lack of confidence in itself. It is a hallmark of an authoritarian regime.” Do you agree or disagree with his opinion? Why?
I agree with society’s lack of confidence, because we do not like changes. We live in a society that has many characteristic of the world, yet we do not accept the characteristic; because we want what is normal rather than abnormal. We would hide or live in denial because we can’t accept the changes in our lives. Books are censor due to parent’s disapproval of how the books will reflect on their children. If the book is dealing with gangs selling drugs, a parent feels that their children will become drugs dealers. Parent believes that what their children read will result in bad behaviors. Therefore society had lack of confidence in dealing with changes because, we rather be safe than unsafe.

I agree. It's the fear of the unknown. If something is not "normal", people tend to right it off as wrong. But what is normal anyways? To us, it's "normal" to drive on the right side of the road, while other countries drive on the left side. Many times we say that they drive on the "wrong" side of the road, but it's not really wrong, it's just different. To them, we're driving on the "wrong side." Either way, it's just different and we have to understand the world is not black or white, it's made up of a wide array colors, which makes us that more unique.
In my opinion, most people seem to be uncomfortable with change. Every semester I notice students and teachers trying to get used to new personalities and new schedules. It seems to take a few weeks before everybody falls into a comfortable routine again. Routine gives us a sense of security. We think we know what to expect, and anticipating hot coffee every morning and a hot bath before bed in the evening is comforting. What's creepy is when people become so anal in their routines, which includes routine thoughts and ideas, that they can't understand, or even fathom the world outside of their routine.
I agree with you about how the society does want to change but don't accept the new ideas because they want normal. Another thing that i agree with you is about the book situation. I remember when i was in junior high, my mom didn't let me read the books that my sister, who was in high school. my mom thought i was not old enough to read and think i might take the story seriously and wrong way, which was not true.
